The hellcat demon era is coming to an end in the same way it started in 2015: with a ridiculous amount of horsepower, a “whatever” attitude, and almost no care for handling.
The 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 is the last of Dodge’s Last Call combustion power cars. It is a street-legal drag racer with 1,025 hp that can go from 0 to 60 mph in 1.66 seconds and run the quarter mile in 8.91 seconds at 151.2 mph, if the dragstrip is ready.
If those numbers stay the same, the hellcat demon170 will be one of the fastest mass-produced cars ever made, no matter how much it costs. Its straight-line speed rivals are the $111,630 Tesla Model S Plaid and a few supercars and hypercars, all of which send their power to the ground through their four wheels.
Compared to those cars, the Demon looks like a good deal that runs on black magic. It starts at $100,361 (a cheeky $96,666 before shipping and gas-guzzler taxes) and only sends 945 lb-ft of torque to the rear tyres.
A Power-Drunk Supercharged V-8
New pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, crank bearings, and aluminium main caps are on the list. Because the pressure in the combustion chambers is so high, the bolts on the cylinder heads have been changed to studs.
A new 3.0-liter supercharger pulls air through a throttle body as big as your fist, and the fuel pumps can deliver up to 164 gallons of fuel per hour, though that’s not easy to check. If you drive the Demon 170 at full speed for less than seven minutes, the petrol tank will be empty.

If the tires spin on start, the driver can use the Demon’s infotainment system to set a custom torque curve for the first 1.6 seconds of each subsequent run. There are also choices to make the shifts from first gear to second gear and from second gear to third gear easier on the tires.
Even though the car can legally run the quarter mile in 8.9 seconds as soon as you drive it off the lot, it will be hard to find a track where you can do that. If you learn how the Demon works and can run a quarter mile in less than 9 seconds, you’ll need a roll cage and a parachute to run at any NHRA event.
A fabricator will have to build a proper cage, but customers will be able to buy the parachute straight from Dodge through its Direct Connection parts catalogue.

Bringing the power down to earth
The new suspension is meant to move weight to the back of the car more quickly so that time isn’t wasted as the nose rises. Kuniskis says that even with this change, the hellcat demon still does a wheelie when it starts.
The 170’s huge amount of power goes through an eight-speed gearbox and a hardened driveline. The driveshaft is 0.4 inches wider and 30% stronger than the one on the Hellcat Redeye. The 3.09:1 back axle is also 0.4 inches bigger.
It has shot-peened gears and a case that is pressure-cast to get rid of any holes. Overall, the new Demon is 50% stronger than the old one. The rear half shafts have 43 splines, which is two more than the Redeye’s. They slide into CV joints that have been heated.
Unsurprisingly, the Demon 170 resembles every other Challenger
We have seen since Dodge started this generation in 2008. The biggest change from the old Demon is that the 170 doesn’t have any front fender extensions. The old car needed those flaps because its front tyres were 315 millimeters wide.
The new car saves 16 pounds because the front tires are smaller. Even though they tried to save weight, the extra improvements to the engine and drivetrain have pushed the total weight up to a stated 4,275 pounds.

Kuniskis says he wants Dodge to make 3,000 Demons for U.S. customers and 300 more for Canadians to match the number of cars made in 2018, but he won’t say for sure how many cars will be made. The company wants to get rid of dealer markups by giving priority to customers who pay the MSRP. Repeat buyers who already own a 2018 Demon will be able to buy a new model with the same last six numbers on the VIN.
